A Review Of Paramore’s Single 'This Is Why'

On the 28th September last year, Paramore dropped their lead single off their 'This Is Why' album, which was later released on the 10th February 2023. The song was written by all three of the bands’ members, Haley Williams, Taylor York and Zac Farro, and a music video was released the same day. Since then, Paramore have been back in the spotlight.

The song was widely praised by fans and critics alike, with some saying it was a good fit in between their previous rock music and more modern style. Both the album and single were highly anticipated, being the first whisper of music from the band for almost six years. Listeners were clearly happy with the long-awaited track and ‘This Is Why’ won Hottest Record of the Year 2022 from BBC Radio 1, as well as reaching number 3 on the US Billboard Rock Airplay charts.

‘This Is Why’ is composed of an in-your-face funk beat layered with electric guitar riffs calling back to Paramore’s earlier works of pop-punk. It is heavier than the experimental music they tried before taking a hiatus, and the lyrics call to feelings of social anxiety and existential thoughts about the world. The relatable track was written last for the album, and unexpectedly became a comeback hit for Paramore.

Paramore has been a continuously successful band and versatile in their style. It’s refreshing to see their old influences making a return, and for it to be so widely received. After a long break and a change of members, it looks like Paramore is here to stay for a long time.
