Let's Talk About The Miley Cyrus Video For 'Flowers'

The video for ‘Flowers’ has been a point of contention amongst fans, with many people picking out and discussing potential links to Miley’s ex. The pair got married in 2018 but shortly broke up in 2019. It’s obvious Miley had a plan with ‘Flowers,’ releasing it on Hemsworth’s birthday and makes references to their joint house in Malibu that burnt down during the Woolsey Fire in November 2018, hence the lyric ‘built a home and watched it burn.’ There are some interesting easter eggs, such as the literal title of the song and the main line of the chorus- ’I can buy myself flowers.’ This statement seems to respond to the popular Bruno Mars song, "When I Was Your Man" that Hemsworth apparently used to dedicate to Miley when they were together. It’s a powerful play on words, going from the heteronormative perception that men should buy women flowers to Miley buying them for herself, eventually realising she can do anything on her own. This is enhanced by the fact the video only contains one character-Miley Cyrus- filmed dancing around her house alone and swimming in her pool. Some are saying that the impressive gold Yves Saint Laurent dress she dons in a part of the video is a comment on one of Hemsworths’ other partners, Jennifer Lawrence who was spotted wearing a similar garment when attending a red carpet event with him.

All of this is speculation of course, but whether it’s true or not Miley Cyrus looks stunning in every outfit she wears in the video. Even Vogue described her vintage fashion in the ‘Flowers’ video as a ‘mic drop moment.’
