Lola Young Releases Debut Album ‘My Mind Wanders And Sometimes Leaves Completely’

The 22-year old has had major success even before her first album, featuring on the John Lewis Christmas advert in 2021 and appeared on James Cordon’s The Late Late Show. She broke the internet (specifically TikTok) when she posted a video of a freestyle called ‘Don’t Hate Me,’ which is now the leading single on her new album.

After an operation on her throat which changed her voice, Lola Young has embraced her new raspiness and moulded her music around a soulful, deep style. Her classic South London accent isn’t played down when she sings, giving her music a British authenticity that hasn’t been done since the likes of Amy Winehouse. In fact, Winehouse’s manager has come out of retirement especially to manage Young. Sounds like slight foreshadowing to me, but exciting nonetheless.

‘My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely’ was inspired by Lola’s schizoaffective disorder, appearing as an almost personal letter to herself. Take the last track ‘Chill Out’ for example, where she tells herself ‘Lola chill out, I’m right here baby.’ The album takes the listener through the trials and tribulations of a young adult that’s sweetly relatable, with references to Gen Z culture and the London lifestyle.

Lola Young has established her sound pretty early on and it’s quite clearly accepted by her audience. ‘My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely’ is a brilliant introduction into the industry for Lola, and it only sparks interest into where she will go next. There are lessons to be learnt from the success of ‘Don’t Hate Me.’
