Sinéad O’Connor Sadly Dies At 56 Years Old

Shuhada' Sadaqat, professionally known as Sinéad O’Connor, was best known for her single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ that was released in 1990, bringing her worldwide fame. She then went on to release 10 albums between the years 1987 and 2014, with her debut album ‘The Lion and the Cobra’ charting internationally. She also went on to take home a Brit Award for International Female Solo Artist in 1991.

Sinéad O’Connor was a fierce advocate for many causes, including ending sexual abuse in the Catholic church, LGBTQIA+ rights and feminism. One notable performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992 saw Sinead singing a song in protest of the Catholic church and ripping up a picture of the pope at the time. This act garnered her many fans and she became an important role model for many marginalised communities.

Many celebrities and fellow musicians have come forward and paid tributes to the singer songwriter, such as Tim Burgess from The Charlatans saying “Sinéad was the true embodiment of a punk spirit.” Bob Geldof, Pink and Brandi Carlile performed her number one single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ during their live performances in her memory.

Sinéad O’Connor was a true talent to the world, and no one else sang or wrote songs just like her. Her death is a devastation to the music industry and to Ireland. She will be remembered as one of the greats for a very long time.
