What Does The Album Art for ‘SOS’ By SZA Mean?

The album 'SOS' was released in early December last year and is SZA’s second studio album. From the success of her first, 'Ctrl,' the singer songwriter has garnered a huge following for her independent work. 'SOS' has been ranked by several publications as one of the best albums of 2022 and it stayed at number one on the Billboard 200 list for more than 7 weeks. She is the third female to do so in the 21st century.

The artwork for 'SOS' stunned fans when it came out. SZA is pictured sitting on a diving board with the sea as the background. The reason it caused much discussion in her fan community is because it almost exactly resembles a famous photo of the late Princess Diana that was taken in 1997 by paparazzi. SZA said she chose to mimic the picture because ‘I just loved how isolated she felt, and that was what I wanted to convey the most’ during an interview with Hot 97. This calls back to the theme of the album which talks about heartbreak and tumultuous relationships, seeing SZA sharing some of the deepest parts of her psyche. The process of making the 23-track album was apparently stressful for the singer and she admitted that she is ‘emotionally unequipped for fame,’ which leaks out into the finished product.

'SOS' is an important album for the R&B genre and SZA has been quickly recognised as an icon. The album art has been cleverly pieced together in conjunction with the tone of the album, and is definitely worth a listen.
