What Is SZA's Kill Bill Music Video Like?

SZA released a music video for the single 'Kill Bill' a few weeks ago. The song is from her most recent album 'SOS' that was released in December last year.

The video pays homage to the cult classic film 'Kill Bill' which the track is named after. It follows the story of the singer on a mission to kill her ex who seemingly betrays her at the start of the video by hiring hitmen to shoot her. There are shots of her sliding out a katana sword, similar to the one Uma Therman dons in the film and dresses in a red version of the well-known leather suit that Therman also wears. The editing is similar to the comic-book style of the film such as high-speed fight scenes, lots of blood and dramatic slashes across the screen. SZA’s stunts look somewhat fake but it sort of works due to the age of Kill Bill the movie. The ‘Kill Bill’ video takes a modern twist towards the end, going from real-life action to an anime style of cartoon for about half a minute which shows the singer ripping out her targets’ heart. The quick change to cartoon certainly keeps the video interesting and brings it into our technologically-based world, contrasting the film which came out in 2003.

The video to SZA’s song ‘Kill Bill’ is a nice reminder of the legendary Quentin Tarantino film and has undeniably taken inspiration from the movie, with an attempt to bring it into the modern world. The cartoon section feels slightly out of place, or should’ve taken up more of the screen time, but it’s an engaging piece of work. It would’ve worked well as a full feature music video, similar to that of Lady Gaga’s move-esque videos. Overall, it’s a good video and stands out from the standard that is popular today.
