The official live action ‘Barbie’ movie finally hit the cinemas on 21st July worldwide after a much anticipated wait, and has an official soundtrack to go along with it. The ‘Barbie: The Movie’ album features an impressive list of pop icons with exciting new songs to accompany the film, including rising star Charli XCX with ‘Speed Drive.’
So far, ‘Speed Drive’ has made it to number nine in the UK charts and is Charli XCX’s sixth top 10 single in the country. Fans have praised the song worldwide, and a music video is confirmed to be coming out which was apparently filmed on the 1st of August this year.
The single is an interpolation of ‘Mickey,’ originally performed by Toni Basil and is a fast-paced, glittery pop song produced in collaboration with Mark Ronson. It has been widely praised for its on point synth-pop style and pink aesthetics, with one reviewer suggesting it was one of the better songs out of the whole soundtrack.
The short-but-sweet track is a perfect fit for the film, encapsulating every pink element of Barbie and is an accolade to Charli XCX as a pop artist. The singer shows her versatility here as she easily puts her own spin on a cult classic, whilst creating a catchy, well-liked pop song. From her unexpected success with ‘Speed Drive,’ there’s no telling where Charli XCX will go next.
